The Bull pub is one of the oldest buildings in Ditchling village, and has been welcoming travellers and locals for over 500 years.  In the early 19th century the pub was a popular stop for the London to Brighton coaches, whose drivers used its stables as their last changing post before the steep ascent over Ditchling Beacon. Ditchling Village itself is contained within the boundaries of the South Downs National Park.

The painting shows the gardens for which it is best known, which include a floral clock in the centre. Palmeira Square was originally part of an estate bought in 1830 by Baron Goldsmid, a Portuguese noble, with the title Baron de Palmeira – hence the name of the square. Palmeira Square was laid out in 1855 on the site of the Anthaeum glass-house.

It was part of the Brunswick estate development laid out at the extreme east end of Hove following the rapid growth of neighbouring Brighton in the early 19th century. It was designed by Amon Henry Wilds and Charles Busby between 1824 and 1828. The terrace is described as an “elegant Regency block” and has Grade I listed status.

It was originally opened in 1866 and enjoyed a wonderful heyday in the 1920′s. Sadly it was declared unsafe and was closed to the public in 1975. This is all that remained after a fire destroyed any hopes on restoration in 2003.

Up until 1970 it was still being used as a main road for traffic passing through Shoreham. It was named the Toll Bridge after the railway line to Horsham. On December 7th 1970 the bridge was closed to motorised traffic but is still enjoyed by walkers and cyclists today and has a lovely outlook from old Shoreham to Lancing with the College in the distance.
